About Calmisu
Julia K — Product Designer & Creator of Calmisu
Hi, I'm Julia. I'm a product designer, and Calmisu is the app I built for the version of myself that needed it.
Why I built Calmisu
In my mid-twenties I started having panic attacks. Nothing cinematic — just a suddenly tight chest, racing thoughts, and the sense that something was very wrong. My GP checked my heart and lungs, everything came back clear, and I was left to figure out the practical side myself: what actually helps in the moment.
I tried a lot of things over the years — slow breathing in meditations, breath of fire in Kundalini classes, watching thoughts drift by like clouds. Some helped, some didn't, and the advice rarely explained why. When I started building Calmisu I dug into the clinical mechanics of anxiety and found there's real, tested science behind the simple techniques: a longer exhale than inhale, sensory grounding, giving a spiraling mind something concrete to do.
The calligraphy part
I first picked up an ink brush at 13, learning to write a few basic kanji as part of an aikido dojo's cultural introduction. I took the classes to fend off school bullies and, honestly, to look cool — and like most of my teenage hobbies, it faded. I don't practice calligraphy today. But the feeling of it stayed with me: the calm, single-pointed concentration, the aesthetics of the process itself — the crisp paper, the ink blooming into the fibers, an imperfect stroke you can't take back. That's the state mindful calligraphy is in Calmisu to recreate, which is why it's a core part of the app and not a novelty feature.
What Calmisu is — and isn't
Calmisu is a free Android app: guided breathing, 5-sense grounding, mindful kanji calligraphy, and calming meditation sounds, with no ads and no account required. It's a self-help tool built from personal experience and published research — not a medical device, and not a substitute for a therapist or doctor. I don't hold clinical credentials, and Calmisu doesn't pretend to treat or diagnose anything.
